Outstanding Razor

I've been using this razor for a number of years now. I first learned to shave some 55 years ago using an old safety razor and my E.J. razor is the finest shaving device I have ever used. The shave it provides is smooth, close and absolutely flawless. The eight of the razor provides excellent balance and comfort. I would heartily recommend making the investment necessary to own one of these razors. My razor will go to my son eventually and I am confident that it will serve him as well as it has me. By the way, to get the best from this razor, use only high quality stainless steel blades.

Beautiful and Amazing Performance

I fell hard for this razor after seeing it online around a year and a half ago. The looks and quality craftsmanship were instantly noticeable even in the images, but the price made me shy away from it. After not having consistent results with the DE89, I was reluctant to buy the Chatsworth Barley. The light weight of the DE89 just did not work with my skin type, and thick, wiry stubble. I tried a heavier handle with the DE89 head, and it made a noticeable difference. The Chatsworth is much heavier than my MOD, so I decided to finally purchase it…I just had three weeks of the closest, most comfortable, and irritation free shaves of my life. The heavy weight makes all of the difference in the world. It is exceptionally balanced, has excellent wet grip, and feels so good in the hand. I had the money saved to splurge with, and I could not be happier with my purchase. It is a beautiful razor…well worth the price tag if you want to indulge yourself.

First, design wise, It is very beautiful. The EJ is rather heavy and provides an excellent grip. The only inconvenience is the price.

Essentially I am reviewing the handle, as the head is the same one used on the DE89, Muhle R89, etc. Mind you the head is a fantastic shaver, just not unique to the Chatsworth. The handle is absolutely beautiful, making the razor very classy. It shaves as good as the razors mentioned above but it looks amazing and the weight is good for those who like a heavier razor. It's a well balanced handle that feels nice in your hands. As with all of these razors, the chrome finishing is second to none. All things considered, this is a great razor for those who like the Muhle/ EJ head but want to upgrade to a really nice piece of craftsmanship.

How aggressive is this razor? I have thick, wiry stubble and sensitive skin. I struggled with the Merkur 23C for weeks before buying a Merkur Ptogress 6 weeks later. I use Astra Superior Platinum blades, and crank my my Progress all the way down to get a comfortable 3-4 pass shave. I am 3 years in with the Progress. Just wondering if someone could give me some insight, and if it is worth investing in the Chatsworth Barley... if I would get as good a shave as the Progress? They quality looks and sounds outstanding. Some reviews say ‘I won’t be sorry’..I hope they are right???Thanx

Thanks for your interest. This razor will provide a mild shave and is not considered aggressive. It should provide a similar shave to your Merkur Progress on the lowest setting.

Is the head made of solid brass, or another material?

Hi Jason,
Here is a reply received when the manufacturer was asking this question:
"Yes all parts on the Chatsworth razor, apart from the razor blade system fittings are machined from solid brass, hand polished, then copper electroplated followed by nickel plating and finally a top coating of chrome. All three coating are applied during the electroplating process, ensuring Edwin Jagger achieves a very high quality flawless mirror finish."

This answer leads me to believe the the head is not brass. The head seems to be a chrome plated zamac.

the razor is very good, it was my first d e razor in thirty years, but i prefer the edwin jagger head with the fendrihan satin stainless steel handle for a better grip
