With cold water, I pass this over my face at the end of a shave. There will be very little stinging if you had a sharp blade and did not get carried away. If I had a blade that was used too much, the alum block lets me know! If I got carried away with the pressure or nicked myself, the stinging would inform me to change the blade, and it took care of any weepers. You have to rinse it off with cool/cold water after it dries. I learned this after the fact.
It comes with a handy case for travel and the alum can be used on your arm pits also as a deodorant! I had read this somewhere and gave it a try. Apply it with some cool water after a shower and let it dry. Don't rinse it off like you do to your face.
