Semogue 1520 Restoration

First off, there’s much I like about this brush, or I wouldn’t have re-purchased after returning the first. It’s the handle that’s the problem. Upon arrival, brush looks great, a fine looking brush. Then the finish begins to crack and the paint start to chip. A quality control issue I’m certain. Rather than return my 2nd, I attempted my first brush restoration. Not usually the way this goes, but I said I liked the brush. I sanded to bare wood, natural stain and applied a clear finish. Brush looks great, different, but great.

Sorry Jeff

I know the previous review is over 4 years old, but I need to come to the defence of the 1520. It was my first ever shaving brush, and could easily be my favourite. As Jeff mentioned, it's super soft and the bristles are great quality. Lots of backbone and great for puck lathering. I have brushes worth 10x, and this is still my go-to. Yep, my 1520 has a chip and small cracks in the handle. Don't care. Still works amazing, and it's well loved.

Jeff L.

nice looking brush. Unfortunately the handle doesn't last.

I am going to try to be objective as possible here. For the price, The knot of boar bristle seems top quality. After two weeks of daily use the knot is SOFTER than my "grosvenor" mixed badger boar brush(and Iv'e been using that one daily for 3 years). The knot is thick and springy but silky smooth on the skin. Perfect for soap puck lathering. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the handle. When I received the brush it looked damn sharp. the paint colours chosen are deep and lustrous with clear straight lines. The problem began after only the third shave. The finish on the handle had begun to crack. It has been two months now of continued use(I have since attempted to seal the crack with epoxy and this has been ineffective in stopping the crack) and the single crack has turned into a hideous spider web crack that grows and shrinks if the brush is wet or dry. I am aprehensive about puchasing a replacement out of fear that I will have the same problem.
